When you delete a file, it is moved to the Recycle Bin. Emptying the Recycle Bin will make the files disappear from Recycle Bin but they won’t be deleted permanently. Emptying Recycle Bin moves your files to a hidden folder and renames them. The files’ content will be stored in a hidden index file, INFO2. The files can be totally cleared out only by overwriting the part of the drive they occupy. To permanently delete your private files from the hard drive, you can use Freerase, a free secure deletion tool.
Unlike other secure deletion tools, Freerase is a free deletion tool which allows users to permanently delete private files. Freerase can be downloaded via the link here – FreeraseSetup.exe.
During the installation process, you can opt for standard or portable/standalone installation. Users who occasionally bring along their pen drive to receive or transfer confidential files can choose to install the free program in their pen drive and take advantage of this application to remove the files permanently. This “Shredder” application will perform multiple data overwriting on your files before deleting from the system so that your sensitive and confidential information will be totally shredded and disappear completely.
Once the installation is done, you will notice a temporary trash bin on your desktop. This trash bin can be resized and its transparency can be set accordingly by right clicking the icon and selecting ‘Appearance’ option.
To delete a file, you just need to drag and drop the file to trash bin. You will be prompted for confirming the deletion and once confirmed, the file will be deleted permanently.
Freerase offers three destruction modes for permanent deletion of files:
• a fast destruction (standard 1-round filling of random data)
• a forced destruction (3 rounds of filling according to DoD 5220.22M standard)
• an ultimate destruction (35 rounds of filling with data according to Guttman algorithm).
You can choose one of the three destruction modes as according to the sensitivity and confidentiality of the file.

Revo Uninstaller does this job for me aside from getting rid of unwanted programs and junk files. It physically erases files and its leftover registries from the hard disk thereby clearing up disk space for better performance.
