What Makes Google So Important?

by Amanda on May 7, 2010

Google is the number one search engine for the Internet, serving as the gatekeeper for the largest information resource in the world. While it used to be Bill Gates and Microsoft who led the field in the development of software in the technological age, that seat has since been filled by Google, who continues to revolutionize the very nature of how we use the web. From YouTube to Earth Maps to email access that includes document processing, Google leads the world of the Internet. Let’s take a look at just what makes Google so important.

Biggest Search Engine on the Planet

Nearly 150,000,000 active web sites exist on the website, but you’re looking for just the right one. How do you find it? Google it, right? Google has even become its own verb. While the computer dictionary might not recognize it, the rest of us do. Three-quarters of all searches on the Internet are done through Google. The remaining quarter is shared by a string of search engines, some special and specific to their industry. If a company wants to succeed on the web, they need to come up on the first page of Google for their marketed keywords. Otherwise, they might as well not exist.

Google’s algorithm determines the relevancy of a website based on a number of key factors, including keywords and link quality. The algorithm they use is forever changing and a complete secret, though Internet marketing companies have learned a few techniques to increase a site’s importance. It’s a continually evolving endeavor, as the nature of the web is always changing. To stay on top, you need quality, relevant content that’s well linked to other quality sites.

Business Model of Innovation

Google is always thinking ahead. They’ve developed web features that have completely changed the nature of how we use the web. Even SEO didn’t exist 12 to 15 years ago, and now it’s an industry that determines a site’s success on the web. YouTube is only a few years old, yet it launches the careers of musicians, movie makers and cute puppy dogs every day. Google is creative for a very good reason and makes most of their money through paid search marketing. The company values and encourages innovation. As a company policy, employees are encouraged to spend 20% of their time developing creative projects of their choosing.
