Microsoft is taking lead in the Apple vs. PC Game

Apple has always been a cool and young guy playing the role of a trendsetter. However, we recently witnessed that Microsoft has been beating Apple at its own game. Apple iPad, the newest member in the Apple family, was met with shoulder shrugs and blank stares. On the other hand, Microsoft’s Windows 7 has brought back that acclaim to the company which was once thought to be unhip fart plagued with number of diseases.

Just have a look at those 15 of “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” commercials:

See how Mac is portrayed – young, cool, fashionable and efficient. While on the other hand, PC is portrayed as an elderly man plagued with number of diseases. This commercial does give a historical document of the way people viewed Apple and the Microsoft in the recent past. However, things are not the same anymore. After recent product releases by the two companies – Apple and the Microsoft, it is seen that the companies have undergone role reversal and Microsoft has got back its role of that trendsetter, fashionable, young guy which it used to be a few years ago.

The latest releases from apple – Snow Leopard, Apple iPad and iPhone 3GS did not see that dumbfounding fanfare which Apple products are destined to meet. They were, on the other hand, met with a ‘Meh!’ acclaim. Consumers believe that Apple is a trendsetter and they hold the company to the highest standards and this belief is working against the company at the moment.

Failure of apple’s products has set Microsoft on the rolls. While apple is struggling with the company’s brand image, Microsoft rolled out some publicly popular products like Project Natal, Windows 7, Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft Courier. These products have brought back that acclamation to the company which it suffered due to commercials and content like “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” commercial. As a matter of fact, Microsoft is being viewed as a ‘comeback’ kid and people love to see that happen.

It is not that the scores are leveled. Apple is still on the lead. But it is certain that if Apple products will lack creativity (which was found missing in recent years), Microsoft will gain an opportunity to bring their products to light and outdo Apple. Microsoft has already started taking lead and Apple seems to have only two choices – to either trump Microsoft at future launches or start lowering the prices of their highly priced products they market for the sake of creativity and productivity.

These conversations are categorized under sub headings pointing to their time of arrival – 1 hour ago, 2 hours ago and so on.

Besides, the Silentale timeline also depicts the total messages received and total messages sent, each month of each year and each day of each month, using a simple graph.

Twitter Acronyms that aren’t Creative Curses

It is no doubt that Twitter makes you a good summary writer. However to save on 140 characters limit that Twitter imposes, people on Twitter use many sorts of acronyms. I don’t use much of mobile devices and I was never in habit of texting (prior to joining Twitter). So, for my first year on Twitter these acronyms seemed to be like creative ways to curse me. However, it was later that I realized that people on Twitter are not so rude to cuss me. Rather, they were using shorthand version of some commonly used words. In this post, we will see some most commonly used Twitter acronyms so that you may not mistake these as a creative curse.

TT – it is shorthand for ‘Trending Topic’, a Twitter feature which shows most talked about things or people globally or locally (as according to your Twitter settings).

DM – it stands for ‘Direct Message’, a message sending option in Twitter which lets you send private message to a fellow tweep. This direct message doesn’t appear on your profile and it is seen only the only recipient. Followers of either tweep are not able to see a direct message.

SMH – stands for ‘Shaking My Head’, used when showing disappointment, shame or when something is not understood.

WWF – stands for ‘Words with Friends’. (PS – for a long time, I thought it to be an acronym for World Wrestling Federation and people calling my action to resemble those of the violent creatures bullying there.)

MM – stands for ‘Music Monday’, a Twitter fashion where people share their music likes or the songs they are listening.

FF – stands for ‘Follow Friday’, a Twitter custom to recommend worthy tweeps to your followers.

TBH – stands for ‘To be Honest’, often used to convince someone of your point.

LMK - stands for ‘Let Me Know’, used by tweeps, facebookers and gamers alike.

AFAIK – well yes, this too isn’t a creative curse. It simply means – ‘As far as I know’.

8 Things to do when your Website or Blog Gets Hacked

“My website has been hacked” – he said. Hardly knowing what to do and how to restore, I remained quiet. It did not actually happened to me but it may happen to you anywhere soon or distant if you own a website or a blog. It may happen when your business is at its peak and when it is time for the seasonal sale. If your website gets hacked during a seasonal sale or the peak time of your business, it could mean a serious loss for you. In this post, we will see how to handle a hacked website and how to get things fixed as soon as possible.

Is your website really hacked?

Sometimes it happen that people mistake a system error as a hack attack. Sometimes you may see error message such as – “Server not found” or sometimes it may happen that your page fails to load. This should not be mistaken as your website being hacked. It is more likely that your server is down or your connection is bad. This issue will be automatically resolved once the server is up again or your Internet connection has improved. However, if on opening your website, you see messages such as – “this website has been hacked” or if your website looks completely different from what it used to be, then you have got a serious problem at hand.

Try connecting via FTP

Sometimes it may happen that the hacker just hacked the password and did not change it. If you’re lucky enough to have your website hacked by such a hacker, then you can easily get your website back. Log into your website using FTP and use the standard login credentials. If you are able to log in, you should try to figure out which files are missing or which pages have been changed. Do not re-upload your website or edit any part of your website. It is to be noted that you are dealing with a virtual crime scene and you are not supposed to touch evidences. You may re-upload your website or edit your website only once the authorities have given you the go-ahead notice.

In case you are unable to log into your website using your standard login credentials, chances are that the hacker has changed the password. In such a situation, you can contact your web hosting company to regain access to your website control panel but you must contact your web hosting company only after you have reported to the authorities.

If you are a website designer or a website manager

In case you are a website designer or the person authorised to manage the website of a company, you should immediately get in touch with the company or individual who commissioned you to manage or maintain the website. Further, you should prepare a full report on how much of the site has been compromised and how much money would be required to reconstruct it. You can further create an estimate of business loss per day because of the incident. This information will come handy when reporting to the web hosting company and the secret service.

Give a call to the Secret Service

Don’t be hesitant. After all, a crime has been committed and the authorities need to be informed of this. Secret Service’s Cyber Crimes Department is the only government organisation that can officially handle the hacking incidents. Here is a list of field offices (link). You can contact the office closest to the location where your website is hosted.

Give as much information as possible

The agents of Secret Service will ask you several questions about your website and the incident. You should be prepared to provide the complete details to the agents. You should in fact prepare a report containing full name and phone number of the website owner, server login information, the date of construction of websites, the date of last updation, the location of the server, how much money have you lost because of this incident, etc. It is important that you give as much detail as you can. Further the agents may also request a copy of your website, so you must be prepared with that too.

Call up your web hosting company

As mentioned in the first point, you should not at once call your web hosting company for the rescue. You must first report the incident to the concerned authorities and only then you should go for seeking the help of your web hosting company. By first reporting the incident to the authorities, it is made sure that your web hosting company does not try to cover up the crime. Provide the hosting company with all the details that they might require including an estimation of your daily loss.

Call for the compensation

In case your hosting contract says that you are responsible for all the losses incurred by hack attacks, you are out of luck. However, if the stars are aligned in your favour, you may get compensated for this mishap. Your web hosting company will want to compensate for your damages outside the court. For this, you should create a proper invoice detailing all the loss and forward it to the hosting company. You will then see your compensation in hands within a few weeks.

6 Google Buzz Features that provides it an edge over other social networks

Google Buzz is the talk of the town these days. When this Google Buzz thing first came out, I found that it was pretty nasty for Google to launch a social networking thing where the market is almost saturated. I even tweeted my opinion (which was obviously not good) about Google Buzz on my twitter profile (link). For those who still do not know Google Buzz, it is the new social network that targets to hit FaceBook and Twitter. While most people believe that it is pretty hard for Google to occupy a greater part of this social networking market, I believe that Google Buzz does contain some pretty nice features that provide it an edge over other social networking websites such as Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace, etc.

Quick and Clean Setup

I do agree that signing up at Twitter is pretty easy and very fast but there is still a large number of social networking websites where signing up and completing the profile takes over 15 minutes. This is not the case with Google Buzz. People using Gmail can get started with Google Buzz without putting any extra effort. They just have to turn it on to enjoy the Google’s way of social networking fun.

The concept of status gained popularity through Twitter. Later FaceBook implemented it and increased the limit from 140 to 420 characters. Further, FaceBook allows integrating one image in the status update. With all this power packing done in their status update process, face book offers quite an advanced status panel. However when compared to Google Buzz, this power packing done by FaceBook looks almost negligible. How to add a FaceBook-style Twitter Fan Widget in your Wordpress Blog

I really like the FaceBook fan widget. It shows few profile pics from a FaceBook fan page and provides a button that anyone can click to join that fan club. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I am not on FaceBook. The reason why I am not on FaceBook can be read in my blog post titled – “Why I chose Twitter over FaceBook” (link). Anyway, that’s another story. In this post we will see how we can add a FaceBook-like Twitter Fan Widget in a Wordpress blog sidebar.

Thanks to Sohail Abid who has created a Wordpress plugin called “Twitter Fans”. This has made adding a Facebook-like Twitter Fan Widget to a Wordpress blog immensely simple.

To activate this plugin and add Facebook-like Twitter Fan Widget to your Wordpress sidebar, follow the following procedure:

1. Login to your Wordpress dashboard.

2. Click “Add new” under “Plugins” from your dashboard sidebar.

3. Search for the plugin “Twitter fans”.

4. Click on “Install” link. The plugin will be installed.

5. Activate the plugin.

6. Go to “Widgets” under appearance.

7. Look for a new widget called “Twitter fans”.

8. Drag it to your sidebar.

9. Enter your Twitter username, no. of fans to show, border colour and other customizations.

10. Save the Twitter Fans’ setting by clicking the “Save” button.

You will now have a FaceBook style Twitter Fan widget on your WordPress sidebar.

Is Buzz bombination disturbing you? Here is how you can disable Buzz in your Gmail inbox

Google Buzz came to my Gmail inbox yesterday (as far as I remember) and tomorrow was the day when a friend of mine asked me how to get rid of this Google buzz thingy. Well, I too wasn’t very comfortable with this thing sticking to my mailbox. And my discomfort is quite evident from my twitter update (link) pointing that Google Buzz is nasty. Anyway, that’s another story and I will try to bring it out of my heart someday. To keep track of my postings and see when I roll out a story on this Buzz thingy, you can subscribe to my blog in your favorite reader.

Now for the main thing, here is the simple way to turn off Google Buzz in your Gmail inbox:

1. Login to your Gmail account

2. Scroll down the page till you reach the bottom.

3. You will then see an option to turn off chat, turn off buzz, switch to HTML version, etc. Click on ‘turn off buzz“.

4. Your Gmail account will reload and you will see that the Buzz thingy is removed from your Gmail account.

To restore Google Buzz in your Gmail account, scroll down the page and select ‘turn on buzz‘.
